How To Care For Granite Countertops

Caring for granite countertops is easy, just keep them clean and dry.

Easy way to care for granite countertops. Granite countertops are the most popular choice for kitchen builds and updates. Although they are the desired surface, there are many questions regarding how to best care for granite countertops.

As with all stone countertops, granite is both durable and beautiful. However, it is also susceptible to staining, and if you use the wrong cleaner, then the sealer may be removed.  Not to worry, these tips will help you to better understand your investment and learn how to care for granite countertops so they will remain beautiful for years.

IS SEALING GRANITE COUNTERTOPS NECESSARY?

Yes. Granite countertops are resistant to staining and easier to clean when properly sealed. A good sealant will penetrate deep down and keep bacteria out of tiny crevices in the stone, also helping to prevent staining.

HOW DO I SEAL GRANITE COUNTERTOPS?

To seal your new (or re-seal your old) stone countertops, start with a thorough cleaning. Use mild dish detergent or specialty cleaning products formulated for stone surfaces. Allow countertops to completely dry after cleaning.

Use a lint-free cloth and saturate it with the selected sealant. The quality of sealers on the market varies. Select one that will seep into the granite surface and protect the stone from staining. A good sealant will allow you a few minutes to wipe up spills before they seep down into the stone and create a stain.

Wipe all the granite surfaces, including backsplash and edges, with the sealant. A light coating is preferred over-soaking the surface. Allow the sealant to dry for 10 minutes, then repeat the process.

Wait 24 hours before using the surface to allow the sealant to soak in and ensure the surface is food-safe.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SEAL GRANITE COUNTERTOPS?

How often to seal granite countertops will depend upon the type of granite you have. Some granite is more porous than others and will need to be sealed every 2-3 months. The color of the granite will also determine how often it needs to be sealed.

The average is every six months, but if the liquid has penetrated into the granite and created a stain, it’s time to apply a sealant.

TIPS TO CARE FOR GRANITE COUNTERTOPS

Just as a sealing granite countertop is necessary, so is knowing how to care for them properly.

Always wipe down the surface after every use with a soft, damp cloth. Sponges and spray cleaners are too harsh and can wear down the stone sealer
Blot up spills immediately. Use paper towels or soft cloth to blot, never wipe. Wiping spreads the spilled liquid around and increases staining risk.
Don’t put hot pots and pans on a granite countertop. Use a trivet or potholder under hot pots and pans to absorb the heat.
Protect the granite surface from liquids by using coasters under all liquid containers and glasses.
If a spill has been allowed to set and harden, place the damp cloth on top of it for two minutes to soften it. After the dried debris has softened, wipe clean with a damp cloth.

A few drops of your favorite essential oil can be added to the disinfecting liquid to make it have a pleasing aroma.
A mixture of baking soda and water will safely soak up and remove spots created by oil-based foods. Create a paste with baking soda and water and place the thick layer of the paste on top of the spot. Cover with a plastic bowl and allow to sit overnight. Clean your countertops regularly by wiping off with a paper towel and rinsing with a damp cloth.

CONCLUSION

How to care for granite countertops is easy, just keep them clean and dry. Sealing granite countertops is definitely necessary, but, fortunately, easy.
