The Countertop Wars of Richardson, Texas

There are 392 grocery stores in Richardson and most of the food they provide will wind up being prepared over a granite countertop, many of them fabricated by Jubilee Company. Granite countertops increase home value and improve quality of home life yet are less expensive than many people realize. Granite is a modern luxury virtually any homeowner can afford.

Due in part to Jubilee’s exemplary reputation with Richardson builders, we have grown into a leadership role in the countertop business and now stand as a top-ranking fabricator of residential and commercial granite countertops. We offer an enormous selection of natural stone slabs from dramatic premium grades to more common classifications, all at wholesale pricing. More than 50 different kinds of granite alone are on display in our 12,000 square foot indoor showroom, which makes us the dealer of choice for Richardson homeowners.

And because we are the fabricator, we can pass on our Fabricator-Direct Advantage to each customer ensuring your countertops are meticulously finished and expertly installed.

The Tile Invasion

The most popular material for kitchen countertops in Richardson is granite. Of course that wasn’t always the case. The first people to live in the area were Comanche and Caddo Indians. In the 1850s, settlers established homesteads near Ferris Creek and soon built a general store, a blacksmith shop and the Floyd Inn where travelers would spend the night. Homes during this period didn’t have “countertops” at all, but kitchen worktables made of wood. “Richardson” per se was not yet even on the map, and neither was the idea of the modern kitchen countertop.

The city was officially chartered in 1873, named for railroad contractor, E. H. Richardson, who was viewed as something of a hero in these parts for installing steel rails from Dallas to Denison right through the newly-named city.

In 1924, came the “Red Brick Road,” later to become Greenville Avenue. Upon that road came the first supplies of porcelain tile to be installed in new-style kitchens featuring built-in countertops. Some of the fancier homes even had a marble insert in the countertop tile for making bread.  The Tile Age had begun and would reign over kitchen countertops for decades to come.

Battle of Laminate Hill

As the city’s population grew after World War II, the wooden tables and tile countertops of Richardson’s earliest homes evolved into slick mass-produced laminates like Formica which soon featured a dazzling array of patterns. Plastic was the buzz word in the dawn of the Space Age and laminate countertops completely dethroned tile. Businesses moved into the area, especially Texas Instruments and Richardson exploded from 1,300 people in 1950 to 56,000 by 1972. But the residential use of granite was still unheard of due to astronomical pricing and a near total lack of availability.

The Granite Revolution

The 1990s brought a revolution in home decor made possible by advances in quarry infrastructure, global supply chain expansion and computerized machinery for stone slab fabrication. Availability and supply soared which in turn brought prices down so ordinary people could afford the enduring beauty of natural stone in their homes.

As quickly as laminate countertops swept in, they were swept out as granite countertops went from being virtually unknown to the King of Richardson Hill in less than a decade.

Practically overnight, granite became the de facto choice for kitchen countertops and were soon ousting laminate countertops in existing homes as homeowners upgraded and remodeled to keep up with the times. The ranks of cheap-looking plastic laminates were decimated, replaced by beautiful slabs of translucent stone. Thanks to it’s density, granite shared the attributes of being low maintenance, easy to clean, and naturally resistant to dirt and stains. But no laminate can emulate a granite slab for luster and beauty.

Other forms of natural stone also became popular in Richardson. Marble is now a popular choice for bathroom vanities due to its striking colors and beautiful contrasting patterns. But marble cannot match the durability of granite. That’s why Jubilee features some 70 slabs of granite, natural stone, engineered stone and cultured surfaces in a range of finishes. That makes it easy for Richardson homeowners to visit our showroom and search out the unique style, finish and edge treatment that is just right for their home.
